Helmut Roskamm

Helmut Roskamm (born June 29, 1933 in Collinghorst near Rhauderfehn , East Friesland; † May 16, 2018 in Au (Breisgau) ) was a German cardiologist .

Roskamm was a nationally successful pole vaulter in his youth . He studied medicine in Göttingen and from 1955 in Freiburg, where he received his doctorate from the internist, radiologist and sports medicine specialist Herbert Reindell in 1958 ( The regulation of breathing and circulation at maximum performance ). Further investigations into the physiology of the circulatory system and the hemodynamics of high-performance athletes followed . In 1964 he qualified as a professor ( The importance of physical activity in prophylaxis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases ). He was a senior physician in cardiology under Ludwig Heilmeyer and became a private lecturer.

He was the founder and medical director of the Benedict Cross Rehabilitation Center (RHZ) for cardiovascular patients , which was opened in 1972 and planned since 1965, and later the University Heart Center (UHZ) in Bad Krozingen , which was created in 2012 from the merger of the RHZ with the heart and circulatory system Circulatory center of the University Clinic Freiburg was created. In 1973, he turned down an appointment as head of the cardiology department at Heidelberg University Hospital. An associated heart center in Bad Krozingen opened in 1977. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Freiburg.

He was editor of the volume coronary diseases of the manual of internal medicine (5th edition, volume 9, part 3, 1984) and edited with Herbert Reindell the standard work on heart diseases (Springer), which first appeared in 1976.

In 1977 he received the Arthur Weber Prize from the German Society for Cardiovascular Research (German Society for Cardiology) and was President of the Arthur Weber Foundation. He was an honorary member of the Polish Cardiological Society.

A house and hall of the Heart Center in Bad Krozingen is named after him. He was an honorary citizen of Bad Krozingen.

Roskamm was married with five children and lived in Au.
