Helmut Sinzinger (born May 6, 1948 in Vienna ; † February 21, 2020 in Vienna) was an Austrian doctor.

Life

Sinzinger's father Franz, also a doctor, dealt with the problem of atherosclerosis when high cholesterol levels and the associated physiological effects were still unknown medical territory.

Sinzinger graduated from the Schottengymnasium in 1966 and graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Vienna in 1973. He began his scientific work while studying with Wilhelm Firbas (anatomy) and Wilhelm Auerswald , the then head of the Physiological Institute at the University of Vienna.

After stays abroad in the USA - u. a. Mayo Clinic, Yale University, London, Basel and Rotterdam, he specialized in nuclear medicine . He was a specialist in internal medicine, atherosclerosis research and nuclear medicine and received his habilitation at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna for atherosclerosis research, nuclear medicine and clinical pharmacology. From 1992 to 2006 and from 2010 he was Deputy Head of the University Clinic for Nuclear Medicine , and in between, from 1993 to 1998 and from October 1, 2012 he was acting director of the University Clinic for Nuclear Medicine. Since 1992 Sinzinger has been the medical director of the outpatient clinic for the diagnosis and therapy of lipid metabolic disorders and atherosclerosis (ATHOS) in Vienna and since 1995 medical director of the Institute for Nuclear Medicine in Vienna. He retired on September 30, 2013. Since December 11, 2017 he has been professor for lipid metabolism at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna. On March 20, 2019, he was elected President of the Society of Doctors in Vienna at the annual general meeting . He died on February 21, 2020 after a brief serious illness.

Research and Teaching

Sinzinger made fundamental contributions to the clinical understanding of prostaglandins .

He has taught as visiting professor at the Universities of Krakow, Poland (1993), Perugia, Italy (1994), Barcelona, ​​Spain (1994) and Ekpoma, Nigeria (1997). In 1997, together with Harald Kritz, he held the first internet lecture worldwide on the subject of "Insights into Atherosclerosis - Internet Based Interaction".

He was co-founder, president and board member of numerous scientific societies and on the advisory board of more than 30 scientific journals.

  • Founding member and President (2013 - 2019) of the Austrian Apheresis Association (Triple A - Austrian Apheresis Association), then honorary member

  • Scientific Prize of the International Union of Angiology (Paris 1992)
  • CIS-Jean Debiesse Nuclear Medicine Prize (Lisbon 1992, Barcelona 1999)

  • Billroth Medal (2016)
  • Golden medal of the 5th International Medical Olympiad (2019)

Sinzinger was u. a. Honorary member of:

  • Austrian Society for Prostaglandin Research (apr) (1988)
  • Honorary President of the DLTH (Danubian League against Thrombosis and Haemorrhagic Disorders) (2013)
  • Slovak Society of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (2016)

He was an external member of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) in Cracow (1993).

Publications

Sinzinger developed training brochures, slide series, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs and led information campaigns as well as national and international consensus conferences. He published more than 800 publications (PubMed).
