Helmut Warneke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Warneke (born May 31, 1927 in Bremen ; † November 7, 2017 in Ostfildern-Ruit ) was a German silversmith and product designer . From 1954 to 1958 he worked for Wilhelm Wagenfeld in the Wagenfeld workshop in Stuttgart. Then Warneke worked as a freelance craftsman and designer in Stuttgart and Ostfildern-Ruit u. a. for the companies Franz Bahner , Düsseldorf, Gebrüder Deyhle , Schwäbisch Gmünd, Carl Prinz , Solingen, Peter Prass , Solingen, Peter Bruckmann und Sons , Heilbronn, Honer & Grimm , Spaichingen and WMF , Geislingen.

life and work

Helmut Warneke received his training as a chaser from 1945 to 1948 at the Bremen silver goods factory Koch & Bergfeld . During his training, he took evening courses at the Bremen art school and then studied at the art school from 1948 to 1949. From 1950 to 1952 Helmut Warneke studied silversmithing, drawing, drafting and design at the state higher technical school for the precious metal trade in Schwäbisch Gmünd with the lecturers Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg , Karl Dittert and Paul Mahringer. From 1952 to 1954 he returned to the Bremen silverware factory Koch & Bergfeld as a draftsman . In 1953 he married the enamel master Fridl Wartner, who had also attended technical school in Schwäbisch Gmünd. With her, Helmut Warneke founded the first workshop in Bremen. Their handicraft collaboration lasted until the late 1960s. In 1954 they both finally moved to the Stuttgart area.

Helmut Warneke followed the call of Wilhelm Wagenfeld , who was looking for a "silversmith who was gifted in terms of form and craftsmanship" for his newly founded development workshop in Stuttgart. Wagenfeld commissioned him to set up the metal workshop in the Wagenfeld workshop , as it was later called. From 1954 to 1958 Warneke worked there as a silversmith. Many hand models were created during this time (e.g. 4200 Atlanta cutlery for WMF, bowling spoons for Buchsteiner, the silver goblet: Wagenfeld catalog raisonné WV586 etc.) In 1958, Helmut Warneke passed his master's examination as a silversmith and founded his own workshop in Stuttgart-Sillenbuch . There he combined the activity of silversmiths with design work for the industry. As a silversmith's work, both sacred equipment such as candlesticks and sacrament sets were commissioned for parishes as well as cutlery, candlesticks, tea and coffee pots for international competitions. As a designer, Helmut Warneke created drafts and hand models for industry in his workshop, such as the Serenade cutlery for railroaders or the tea and coffee service for Gebr. Deyhle, whose coffee pot won second prize in the international competition The silver coffee pot in 1959 . He also developed children's toys such as the Losta plug-in game (1959) for Dusyma, Miedelsbach near Schorndorf. Through the mediation of the Landesgewerbeamte (LGA) Stuttgart, the relationships with industry were established and deepened. In 1963 the family of six and their workshop moved into their own house in Ostfildern Ruit. From 1966 to 1969, Helmut Warneke took master silversmith Gunter Rudolph into his workshop as a freelancer.

In 1963, in addition to continuing his own workshop, Helmut Warneke entered into contractual, independent cooperation with the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) Geislingen, where he was given his own work space. In the following years, many designs were created that went into series production:

  • over 20 cutlery, including the Brasilia model , which was included in the range for 37 years [1972–2009]
  • Cooking utensils and hollowware such as the Festival and Baden-Baden table series or the Juwel , Brillant and Teerose cooking pot series (for the latter only the shape) or the Bio Star cooking pot series , which was recognized in 1983 by the Essen House for Industrial Form and included in its permanent product show.

The collaboration with WMF ended in 1990 when Warneke retired. In addition to this activity as a product designer, Helmut Warneke continued to work as a freelance artisan.

Helmut Warneke was a member of the Association of Craftsmen in Baden-Württemberg and of the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID). In this context he also met Hans Warnecke, for example at a conference in Geislingen on December 4, 1959. - Unfortunately, there were several mix-ups with the older Hans Warnecke.
