Helmuth Schlömer (born May 20, 1893 in Hausberge on the Weser near Minden ; † August 18, 1995 in Minden-Lübbecke ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Schlömer joined the military in 1913 and served as an officer in the First World War . After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr and served in various units. In 1935 he worked as a teacher at the Munich War School. During the Second World War he was in command of the 3rd Motorized Infantry Division .

Schlömer later headed the XIV Panzer Corps as commanding general , which took part in the Battle of Stalingrad as a unit of the 6th Army . Since Colonel-General Friedrich Paulus felt bound by Hitler's order to hold out and refused to surrender as a whole, Lieutenant General Schlömer surrendered on January 29, 1943 as the first of the commanders with the remnants of his tank corps and went into Soviet captivity.

Schlömer was one of fifty generals who called on December 8, 1944 in the appeal “To the people and the Wehrmacht” to end the war and Hitler's tyranny. In 1949 he was released from captivity.
