Vladimir Smirnow ( Russian Владимир Смирнов ; born June 11, 1947 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet ski jumper .

Career

Smirnow made it to the Soviet national team in 1967 and made his international debut in the New Year's competition of the Four Hills Tournament 1967/68 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . After a weak 69th place on the Great Olympic Hill , he reached 29th place on the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck . After these two competitions he broke off the tour and reached 72nd place in the overall ranking.

At the following Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble in 1968 , Smirnow landed on the normal hill, tied with John McInnes, on 55th place. He was ranked 41st on the large hill.

After a year off, he started the World Cup season at the Four Hills Tournament 1969/70 . Even at the opening competition in Oberstdorf , Smirnow jumped to 22nd place on the Schattenbergschanze . In Garmisch-Partenkirchen he showed an even better result with 21st place. In Innsbruck he only landed on the 62nd place before he achieved the best individual tour result with 17th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen . In the overall ranking he finished 23rd with 804.2 points, which was the best overall result of his career for him.

After he did not start at the following World Cup and also at the 1972 Winter Olympics because he was not part of the first team, he started in the 1972/73 season for the last time on an international level. At the Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 he achieved the best individual result of his career with 13th place in Bischofshofen. However, since he only achieved mixed widths in the other three competitions, he was only 60th in the overall ranking at the end of the tour.
