Helnæs is a peninsula in Denmark on the west side of the island of Funen in the Little Belt , which is connected to Agernæs and West Funen by a 2.8 km long, narrow dam, the Langøre. Helnæs is located on the west coast about 20 km south of the city of Assens and is part of the municipality of Assens .

Helnæs

colonization

Helnæs has been inhabited since the Stone Age and is therefore rich in prehistoric evidence, such as the dolmen on the hills south of Maden and in Helnæsskov. The name appears for the first time in writing in 1231 as Hælghænæs , which means something like "holy headland".

Helnæs By in the center of the island is the only place on the peninsula. The area has some manors (Wedellsborg, Krengerup Castle , Brahesborg and Hagenskov Castle).

nature and landscape

The highest point on the peninsula is 30 m. There are three nature reserves : Bobakkerne, Helnæs Made and Feddet. Bobakkerne is located in the far north as a large forest directly behind the dike. West of Helnæs By is Helnæs Made, a large, protected beach and meadow area with wading birds, birds of prey and orchids. It emerged from a silted-up bay, of which a lake that was only recreated in 1997 remained. On the east side of Helnæs By there are forest areas with rich animal life.

Economy and tourism

There is an antique shop and several galleries on the peninsula. At Ebberup, 14 km from Helnæs By, there is Hviids Garden, a large Japanese-inspired garden with a lake, stone arrangements, granite sculptures and bonsai. There is also the medieval Hagenskov Castle . At Linde Hoved is the 28 m high square lighthouse Helnæs Fyr , which can be visited.

The district of Feddet has a beautiful beach. The peninsula is also a popular holiday destination for anglers.

Helnæs was elected Village of the Year by Assens Municipality in 2010.
