Bartholomeus van der Helst
Bartholomeus van der Helst (* around 1613 in Haarlem ; † before December 16, 1670 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter.
Life
Helst, who was initially a student of Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy , appears to have formed afterwards under the influence of Frans Hals , then in Amsterdam under the influence of Thomas de Keyser and Rembrandt . His earliest picture, dated 1637, shows the regents of the Waale Weeshuis in Amsterdam in the town hall.
His main work is the rifle meal in the Reichsmuseum in Amsterdam , which the Amsterdam Civic Guard organized to celebrate the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, a colossal picture with 25 life-size figures. The speaking facial features, the mastery of modeling, the strong, clear coloring make it a major work of all time.
Head of the Amsterdam Rifle Corps (1657) is another well-known work by the artist, of which a smaller replica, painted by the artist in 1658, is in the Louvre . The treatment is tamer here, the color less strong. This direction will later gain the upper hand. There are numerous portraits of the artist, most of which are distinguished by their elegant posture and smooth, clean treatment, and his self-portrait from 1657 in the Uffizi in Florence.
In 1653 he founded the St. Luke Guild with the portrait painter N. de Helt-Stokade in Amsterdam . He died in December 1670.
