Hemilutjanus macrophthalmos is a marine fish from the group of perch relatives that occurs in the eastern Pacific on the coasts of Chile and Peru, as well as in the Galapagos Islands .

features

Hemilutjanus macrophthalmos has a typical perch shape with a squat, laterally flattened body and a large head and mouth. The fish are brown in color, the lower half of the body is lighter than the upper half. A dark stripe runs along the fully formed side line . The scales are small. The outer edge of the preoperculum is sawn. The caudal fin is indented. The dorsal fin is supported by ten spines and ten to eleven soft rays. The anal fin has three fin spines and nine soft rays. Hemilutjanus macrophthalmos can reach a maximum length of 50 cm and a weight of 1.7 kg.

Way of life

Hemilutjanus macrophthalmos lives at depths of 10 to 55 meters on coasts with vertical rocks over sand or stone floors. During an El Niño , the fish seek refuge in deeper water layers. They feed on small fish and crustaceans.

Systematics

The fish species was scientifically described for the first time in 1846 by the Swiss naturalist Johann Jakob von Tschudi under the scientific name Plectropoma macrophthalmos . In 1876 the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker introduced the genus Hemilutjanus (= half Lutjanus ) for the species , which has remained a monotype to this day. The ichthyologist G. David Johnson determined in 1984 that the species cannot be a snapper (Lutjanidae) and placed it as incertae sedis in the subordination of the Percoidei . Hemilutjanus macrophthalmos was temporarily placed in the family of sawfish (Serranidae). In early March 2020, the monotypical family Hemilutjanidae was finally introduced for the species. It is closely related to the saw bass.
