Hemina is an Australian power , melodic and progressive metal band from Sydney that was founded in 2008.

history

The band was founded in 2008 by guitarist and singer Douglas Skene. In July 2010, As We Know It, a first three-song EP called As We Know It was released. The songs are also included on the later debut album, which was released in October 2011 under the name Synthetic . The sound carrier had been mixed and mastered by Tommy Hansen in Jailhouse Studios . It initially only appeared in Australia and only appeared in the rest of the world the following year. Appearances with Voyager and Arcane were held for release . In late 2011, drummer Andrew Craig left the line-up and was replaced by Mathew Irsak. After further appearances in 2012, Irsak resigned in November. In mid-2013 they went on a national tour with Kamelot . 2014 followed with the next album with Nebulae . In March 2015, the band performed with Uriah Heep . The third album, Venus , came out in 2016. The following year the group took part in ProgPower Europe . In their career, the band has also performed with Apocalyptica and Queensrÿche , among others .

style

Michael Kohsiek from Rock Hard wrote in his review of As We Know It that the band plays melodic progressive metal on it, whereby one does not try "to create novel sounds and things that have never been there". Similarities with Shadow Gallery , Poverty's No Crime and Avalon can be heard in the songs . In a later issue Kohsiek reviewed Synthetic and found that it could compete with genre colleagues like Vanden Plas or Vanishing Point . The heaviness of the songs is more towards Shadow Gallery. So there is “Prog light” and no completely insane roller coaster rides à la Watchtower ”. The songs are still quite complex and the guitar work fluctuates between “catchy and complicated meandering string work”. The album is therefore suitable for fans of both progressive and melodic metal. Alex Klug from Metal.de found Nebulae to be mostly normal Progressive Metal with occasional Power Metal inserts. He drew a comparison with Dream Theater and "more bearable" Kamelot . You move "somewhere between string ensemble overdose, solid twin guitar motifs and Christmas NIGHTWISH organs" and process refrains that would be reminiscent of pop music . The vocal pairing of Jessica Martin and Douglas Skene is somewhat reminiscent of that of Devin Townsend and Anneke van Giersbergen , but does not come close to this in terms of quality. On the electric guitars, "instead of technical Petrucci fiddles, they prefer to constantly hack around on a single note" in order to be considered progressive. Peter Kubaschk from Powermetal.de said to Venus that Skene's singing was particularly striking. There are typical rhythms for the djent , which was also the case with the predecessor, and in the chorus you get closer to pop. The music is progressive because it is subject to constant change on the album. A gospel choir, wind instruments, a synthesizer, flute sounds and a piano are also used. The album is suitable for fans of Anubis , Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation .
