Arcane was an Australian progressive metal band from Brisbane that was formed in 2004 and split in 2015.

history

The band was formed in 2004 and consisted of singer Jim Gray, keyboardist Matthew Martin, guitarist Michael Gagen, bassist Mick Millard and drummer Stephen Walsh. The band got their name from the book Life, the Universe and All the Rest of Douglas Adams . With this line-up, the first local appearances followed, before Shirley Jackson joined the group as the new bass player, before she was replaced by Brendon Blanchard in 2006. In 2007 the debut album ... Ashes was released , which was originally planned only as an EP with the eponymous 20-minute song. In 2008 the band stopped their live activities to work on their next album. In 2009 more concerts were held in which Blake Coulson was involved as the new drummer. Among other things, she played in Australia as the opening act for Queensrÿche . In the same year, the second album Chronicles of the Waking Dream was recorded and released. In 2009 the group also played at Progfest and in Melbourne at the Sonic Forge Festival and went on tour with Ne Obliviscaris . In 2015, the album Known / Learned followed, which was financed by a crowdfunding campaign. It started in July 2013, with the goal of US $ 10,000 being reached within three days by 136 donors. Adrian Golebi is now the new bass player in the band. The dissolution was announced in December of the same year. In her career, Arcane has performed with Anathema , Soilwork , Dead Letter Circus , Sleepmakeswaves , Toehider , Five Star Prison Cell , The Eternal and Hazards of Swimming Naked , among others .

style

The Whistler of progarchives.com described the music as aggressive progressive metal, which incorporates orchestral arrangements and poetic narration and which is comparable to the music of Angra , Porcupine Tree and Opeth . According to Brian Fischer-Griffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band plays avant-garde , very melodic, complex and experimental Progressive Metal in the style of Porcupine Tree and Pain of Salvation . Peter Kubaschk from Powermetal.de wrote in his review of Known / Learned that the band played modern music on its predecessor, between progressive metal and rock . On the follow-up album, which consists of two CDs Known and Learned , both CDs would be very different from each other. The music is comparable to that of Redemption and Dream Theater . The group sounds more modern and mostly also tougher. The vocals have the same presence and conciseness as that of Ray Alder or James LaBrie , without, however, resembling them. On the second CD the group is more varied and offers everything from "Gefrickel" in the dream theater style to flamenco guitars . Kubaschk then described the music as well-staged progressive metal. The second CD is quieter and also makes use of the Mellotron and the mandolin .
