Sleepmakeswaves is an Australian post-rock band from Sydney that was formed in 2006.
history
The band was formed in 2006 and consisted of bassist and keyboardist Alex Wilson, drummer Tom Binetter and guitarists Jonathan Khor and William Smith. After the group had released a first demo and the first concerts had been held, a first EP was released in 2008, In Today, Already Walks Tomorrow . The fact that a fan of the film Twilight - Till (s) zum Morgenranke backed his YouTube fan video with the Sleepmakeswaves song One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go of My Fears in the same year , the group increased its awareness considerably increase, as the video was clicked 200,000 times within a very short time. As a result, the song was downloaded over 50,000 times . In the same year Tom Binetter left the line-up and was replaced by Otto Wicks-Green. The group then recorded their first album in Wingello State Forest , New South Wales , which was released in 2011 under the name … and So We Destroyed Everything . The release was followed by appearances in Australia with Russian Circles , Mono and Boris . Meanwhile, drummer Smith left the band and was replaced by Tim Adderly. With a new line-up, appearances in Australia with Karnivool and a European tour with 65daysofstatic followed . Since 65daysofstatic and Sleepmakeswaves became friends, they later held other gigs in Australia and tours in Europe. In 2011 the band held a total of eight tours through Australia, three through Europe and several concerts in the USA including a performance on the South by Southwest . In the same year the band played with Dead Letter Circus and Tortoise , among others , before they were nominated at the ARIA Awards in 2012 . In 2014, the second album Love of Cartography was released , which was funded by crowdfunding . The album reached number 31 in the Australian album charts.
style
According to laut.de , the group has been mentioned in the same breath as Mogwai since its success through the YouTube video . On the band's second album, the focus is on changing loud and quiet passages, as is the case with many post-rock bands. At the beginning of their career the band was still very aggressive, before they got more complex on the second album and built in “electronic gadgets”. In addition, the guitars now sound “clean”. The band counts heavier post-rock bands like Russian Circles and And So I Watch You from Afar among their influences. A comparison with groups like Karnivool and 65daysofstatic would also suggest itself. The group itself calls their music "crescendo core". According to Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard , the band plays varied post-rock on Love of Cartography , as aggressive and shallow passages alternate. In contrast to many current post-rock bands, the group thinks about the basic principles of the genre. The bass is played with virtuosity and a few electronic influences are also incorporated.
