Hemitrichia calyculata (syn. Hemitrichia stipitata ), in German sometimes called sepals Scheinhaarstäubling called, is a slime mold (Myxomycet) from the family of Trichiidae .

features

Scalp and spurs

Hemitrichia calyculata forms stalked fruiting bodies ( sporocarps ) that grow in loose groups, standing individually or fused together in the stalk area. They reach a height of one to two millimeters. The spore capsules (sporocarpies) are spherical to flattened top-shaped and yellow-brown to olive-yellow in color. They become about 1 mm wide.

The membranous base ( hypothallus ) is colored brown and borders the base of the stem irregularly. The stem is dark brown and evenly thick. It becomes 1–2 mm long and 0.1–0.2 mm thick. In its center there are spore-like cysts that are around 10–20 µm in size and appear opaque red-brown in transmitted light, sometimes honey-colored on the outside.

The shell ( peridia ) appears olive to yellowish in transmitted light. It is densely covered with fine warts, some of which are arranged in rows. The peridia opens irregularly in the upper part up to about halfway, whereby the lower part remains as a calyx. The hair braid ( capillitium ) is particularly elastic and appears light brown in bulk. It is attached to the base of the cup towards the tip of the handle, but otherwise free. Conversely, it emerges in the shape of a drop from the cup and finally falls off. The fibers appear light yellowish-brown in the transmitted light and have 4 to 5 moderately tightly wound spiral strips with fine fringes. They form a large-meshed network with a few free ends that are rounded. The fibers are 7–8 µm thick. The spores appear yellow to ocher in bulk, light yellow in transmitted light. They have fine warts and / or a fine network and measure 7–8 µm in diameter.

The plasmodium is yellow.

Species delimitation

Hemitrichia clavata , with which it is often confused, is very similar . H. clavata differs in its unevenly thick stalks, which gradually merge into the stalk, and the less strongly cross-linked scalp, which is more matted and not in the form of a teardrop; microscopically it is more fringed. The spores are somewhat larger, more clearly ornamented and surrounded by a wide border.

Ecology and diffusion

Associations with Hemitrichia clavata , H. serpula , Metatrichia vesparium , Trichia scabra and T. varia were observed.

Hemitrichia calyculata is a very common species in Central Europe. Gaps in distribution are probably also due to confusion with H. clavata .
