Life

Training in Italy

Carlo Luigi Spegazzini completed his complete school and university education in Italy. From 1876 to 1879 he studied at the Royal School of Viticulture and Enology in Conegliano . Here he learned several foreign languages and specialized in the study of mushrooms under the guidance of the famous Italian mycologist Pietro Andrea Saccardo . In his first publications he dealt with parasitic fungi of the grapevine and the large mushrooms of northern Italy.

First years in Argentina

After completing his studies, Spegazzini went to South America in 1879 to gain further experience as a scientist. After a stopover in Brazil, he reached Argentina towards the end of the year . Here he took up an assistant position at the Faculty of Physics and Natural Sciences at the Universidad de Buenos Aires . In 1881 Spegazzini took part in the Italian-Argentine Bove Expedition to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego , on which he discovered previously unknown species of plants and mushrooms in 1108. On this expedition he was shipwrecked near Cape Horn and had to rescue his herbarium and notes by swimming on land. Spegazzini used the stay to study the culture and language of the indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego. He later published a grammar of their language.

La Plata

After his return, Carlos Spegazzini was a member of the commission that selected the location for the newly founded capital of the province of Buenos Aires (later La Plata). In La Plata he settled permanently in 1884. He took part in the establishment of the newly founded Universidad Nacional de La Plata , gave lectures in the faculties of natural sciences, agriculture, chemistry and pharmacy and founded the arboretum .

Carlos Spegazzini subsequently undertook more than 20 research trips through Argentina, Chile , Brazil and Paraguay . His personal herbarium contained about 4,000 species of South American mushrooms, about half of which were new species. In his time he was considered one of the world's leading mycologists. In addition, Spegazzini dealt intensively with vascular plants , of which he was able to describe around 1000 new species.

In 1924 he published the magazine Revista Argentina de Botánica , of which only four issues appeared.

Aftermath

Carlos Luis Spegazzini bequeathed his house, collections, library and scientific instruments to the University of La Plata with the proviso that a botanical institute be established to bear his name. The Carlos Spegazzini Institute was opened in 1930 and still exists today. The Botanical Museum of the University of La Plata has also been named after him since 1947.

Several species of plants and mushrooms were named after Carlos Luis Spegazzini, including the cactus Rebutia spegazziniana . The mushroom genera Carlosia G.Arnaud , Neospegazzinia Petr. & Syd. , Spegazziniella Batt. & IHLima , Spegazzinula Sacc. and the plant genus Spegazziniophytum Esser from the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae) are named after him. The Spegazzini Glacier in the Argentine Los Glaciares National Park and the city of Carlos Spegazzini in the greater Buenos Aires area were also named after him.
