Hendrik Hondius (* 1573 ; † 1650 ) also d'Hondt or de Hondt , was a Dutch publisher , draftsman and engraver . He came from a family of a schoolmaster from Duffel in Flanders .

Life

Hondius came from a Dutch printer and publisher family of Flemish origin. Like the Hondius family from Amsterdam , with whom it can easily be confused, they had fled their Flemish homeland because of the war that was to lead to the independence of the Netherlands from Spain . The father Guiljam Hondius became a schoolmaster in Duffel. After his death, the widow, Hondius' mother, lived in Antwerp . Hondius himself, born on June 9, 1573 in Duffel, married the daughter of the goldsmith Godefroy van Gelder in Antwerp , with whom he had learned, Sara Jansz (also Jansdaughter). He then studied with Jan Wierix in Antwerp . Before 1597 he moved to The Hague and was accepted into the guild there in 1597 . In the same year he received his first printing right for a portrait of Prince Maurits. In 1599 he was granted general citizenship of the city. He left the city in 1603, lived in Amsterdam and in 1604/05 in Leiden , and in 1605 he returned to The Hague. He made trips to Cologne, Paris and London. Between 1597 and 1600 and around 1616 Hondius and his wife Sara had five daughters and two sons, the portraitist and copper engraver Willem Hondius (? 1600–1658, other sources date? 1597–1652) and Hendrik Hondius II, who also became a publisher. Hondius was buried on October 25 or 29, 1650.

With Hans Vredeman de Vries he published a textbook of perspective in 1604–05 . He also engraves other artists, including Pieter Brueghel the Elder . Hondius himself is last recorded in The Hague in 1649 when his self-portrait was published in Jan Meyssens ' Ikonographie.
