Hendrik Wade Bode

Hendrik Wade Bode (born December 24, 1905 in Madison , Wisconsin , † June 21, 1982 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) ) was an American electrical engineer . Bode introduced important analysis methods for electrical networks that are still used today in control engineering.

Life

Bode had Dutch ancestry, his father was a professor at the University of Illinois . He finished high school at the age of 14 and applied to the University of Illinois, where he was rejected. He received his BA in 1924 and his MA (mathematics) in 1926 from Ohio State University .

In 1926 he began to work at Bell Laboratories on electrical networks and the design of electrical filters and was also a graduate student at Columbia University in New York , where he received his doctorate in physics in 1935. In 1929 he moved to Bell Labs in the mathematics department headed by Thornton Carle Fry and began research on network theory and its applications in long-distance communication.

In 1938 he developed his groundbreaking Bode diagram .

During the Second World War , Bode worked on radar-based automatic controls for anti-aircraft guns. For these contributions he received the Presidential Certificate of Merit in 1946 . After the war he did research in military and civil areas. In 1956 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society and in 1957 a member of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1962, Bode was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1969 he received the Edison Medal of the IEEE , in 1975 the Rufus Oldenberger Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and in 1979 the first Control Heritage Award from the American Automatic Control Council .

After retiring from Bell Labs in 1967, he became Gordon McKay Professor of Systems Engineering at Harvard University and retired in 1974.
