Henning Hagen (* around 1435 in Helmstedt ; † 1504 ibid. (?)) Was a German Benedictine monk and late medieval historian . He wrote the first city chronicle of Helmstedt .

Live and act

Henning Hagen, whose family origin is unknown, probably attended the St. Aegidien monastery school in Braunschweig . He was then first a monk in the Benedictine monastery Werden and from 1492 (?) To 1504 provost of the Benedictine monastery St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt. In 1499 he took part in the general chapter of the Bursfeld congregation in Thuringia.

Hagen wrote several writings, including a catalog of the abbots of the Werden monastery and a compilation of the documents of the St. Ludgeri monastery in a copy book . His town chronicle of Helmstedt, published in 1491, deserves special mention. It contains a systematically arranged collection of around 470 certificate extracts, which are made accessible via a register and which Hagen has provided with his own comments. In the Wolfenbüttel State Archives there is also a 167-page school notebook from Hagens from 1453. It contains elaborations of theological lectures and moral-religious stories.

Hagen's historical writings are characterized as "noteworthy". His city chronicle is one of the earliest in the Braunschweig region and is widely used, for example for research into legal history . Hagen's listing of the Helmstedt documents formed an essential basis for the Helmstedt city archive.
