René Dufaure de Montmirail (* 1876 in Verdun , † 1917 in Marseille ) was a French athlete and founder of Olympique Marseille .

biography

Born in Champagne , Dufaure de Montmirail spent part of his youth in Algeria , where his father, an officer , was in charge of the military garrison in the northern Algerian city of Blida .

After graduating from high school , Dufaure de Montmirail went to Marseille , where he worked as a sales representative. He got to know football during an internship in England and was an enthusiastic fan of the sport from then on. When he was back in Marseille, he founded the Football Club de Marseille , which initially played rugby and soon also football. This club was soon renamed Olympique de Marseille .

The OM club logo was also designed by René Dufaure de Montmirail and bears a significant resemblance to the coat of arms of the Dufaure de Montmirail family, which consists of a rounded D and an M (see photo).

He was the first president of Olympique Marseille and in 1902 transferred the office to the previous vice-president Arnold Bideleux.

René Dufaure de Montmirail died in Marseille in 1917 at the age of 40.
