Henning Hopf (born December 13, 1940 in Wildeshausen near Oldenburg ) is a German chemist. He was a professor at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the TU Braunschweig .

Life

Hopf studied chemistry from 1960 at the University of Göttingen (as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation ) and from 1963 with a Fulbright scholarship at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he received his doctorate in 1967 (The stereochemistry of ion-pair return in p -substituted benzhydryl-p-nizobenzoates). He completed his habilitation in 1972 in Karlsruhe (isomerization and addition reactions of acyclic isomers), became a professor in Würzburg in 1975 and, in 1978, was appointed to the chair of organic chemistry at the TU Braunschweig. Until his retirement in 2006 he was managing director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry.

In 2004/5 he was President of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) and its honorary member. Hopf received the Chemistry Prize of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , the Adolf von Baeyer Memorial Coin , the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize , the Max Planck Research Prize , the Literature Prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (2001) and the Gmelin-Beilstein Commemorative coin .

Hopf received honorary doctorates from the Technical University of Bucharest and the Babeș-Bolyai University in Klausenburg / Cluj ( Romania ).

Hopf deals with cyclophanes , highly unsaturated hydrocarbons ( alkynes , allenes , cumulenes ) in organic synthesis, disrupted poly systems, alicyclic compounds, new planar p systems, retinoids , acetylenes .

He was co-editor of the chemical reports and of Liebig's annals and was the literary representative of the board of the GDCh. He is a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .

Hopf also translated books from English, such as the "Reaction Mechanisms of Organic Chemistry" by Peter Sykes and "Organic Stereochemistry" by Samuel Wilen and Ernest L. Eliel .
