Henri-Louis Dupray , also Henri Dupray (born November 3, 1841 in Sedan , † 1909 in Paris ) was a French painter who is particularly known for his military depictions.

Life

Henri Louis Dupray had initially aspired to a professional career in the military, but had to end it prematurely in 1859 after a riding accident. His interest in art developed through technical drawing and he began to take lessons from the painters Léon Cogniet and Isidore Pils . Already at the beginning of his artistic career, Dupray specialized in the detailed representation of military subjects, only occasionally did he devote himself to portraiture. From 1863 he exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris and in 1865 he became a member of the artists' association of the Société des Aquafortistes . The painter Édouard Manet was one of his friends.

In Dupray's work, scenes from the French Revolution and motifs from the wars during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte initially predominated , after 1870 motifs from the Franco-German War were increasingly added. In 1878 he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor .

In addition to oil paintings, Dupray created various etchings ( Ecole de tambours , La Patrouille , Brigadier, vous avez raison ). In addition, his drawings appeared repeatedly in the magazine Le Courrier français and he worked several times as a book illustrator for various authors such as Alfred de Vigny , Henri Dupont-Delporte and Victor Hugo . In the early 1880s, Dupray took part in the execution of the battle panorama Siège de Lyon by the painter Gustave Mardoché Neymarck . In the great historical panorama Histoire du Siècle by the painters Henri Gervex and Alfred Stevens from 1888–1889, Dupray made the Napoleon section.
