Ewald Bender

Ewald Bender (born November 28, 1883 in Trarbach an der Mosel ; died after 1947 ) was a German art historian who dealt in particular with Ferdinand Hodler .

Ewald Bender was the son of the businessman Wilhelm Bender and his wife Maria, b. Ramish. From 1894 to 1903 he attended high school in Trarbach. He then worked as a businessman for two and a half years, from the winter semester 1905/06 he studied art history in Munich , from the summer semester 1907 to Easter 1910 in Berlin . On December 21, 1910 he was with Max Semrau at the University of Greifswald with his dissertation on colored composition. A PhD contribution to the knowledge and history of coloring . From 1912 to 1914 he worked on the editorial team of the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present in Leipzig . The writer Jacob Picard dedicated the poem Hymne to him and Hans Heinrich Ehrler in the volume of poems Das Ufer in 1913 , which is subtitled “My friends Ewald Bender and Hans Heinrich Ehrler”.

He wrote several writings about the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler , for example about his painting of the “Exodus of German Students into the War of Liberation in 1813” at the University of Jena . In 1922 he first wrote a treatise on life and from 1923 on, together with Werner Y. Müller, a two-part monograph on this painter and his oeuvre. Until at least 1942 he wrote articles for the magazine Die Kunst für alle , for example about the sculptors Richard Engelmann , Georg Kolbe , Johann Heinrich Dannecker or about exhibitions by artists from the Berlin Secession . By no later than 1937, he was in Cologne, where he for the magazine for construction united Central Journal of Engineering Administration wrote and in Cologne-Lindenthal lived. Among other things, he reported on the planned redesign of the House of German Crafts in Frankfurt am Main by Clemens Klotz . Until 1947 he also worked as an expert with Otto Förster and prepared reports on the authenticity of works of art, for example a copy of the oil painting “ Villa am Meer ”, which both of them classified as the authentic work of Arnold Böcklin .
