Henri Antoine de Clermont

Henri Antoine de Clermont (* 1540 ; † 1573 at La Rochelle ) was Viscount de Tallard, Duc de Clermont (1571), then Duc de Tonnerre (1572).

Life

Henri de Clermont was a member of the Clermont-Tonnerre family . He was the son of Antoine III. de Clermont (1498–1578) and Françoise de Poitiers, the older sister of Diane de Poitiers .

He was Gentilhomme de la chambre du Roi and Chambellan du Roi . In the Third Huguenot War , he took part in the successful defense of Poitiers in 1569 . As Lieutenant-général de province of King Charles IX. for the Bourbonnais and Auvergne he appointed him on May 1, 1571 Duke of Clermont and Pair de France . Since his father Antoine did not want to part with the county of Clermont, the duchy was renamed Duché de Tonnerre the following year . Henri de Clermont died in the siege of the Huguenot fortress of La Rochelle in 1573 before the Parlement had the title registered .

On May 17, 1570 he had married his niece Diane de La Marck , the widow of Jacques de Clèves , Duke of Nevers , and daughter of Robert IV.
