Henri-Aimé Duhem (born April 7, 1860 in Douai , † October 24, 1941 in Juan-les-Pins ) was a French landscape painter and writer .

Duhem was originally a lawyer at the Douai court , but since 1883 he devoted himself to his passion for drawing and watercolor .

In 1887 he began in Paris drawing at Henri Harpignies to study and oil painting at Emile Breton. While visiting Breton's niece, Virginie Demont-Breton, in 1889, he met the painter Marie Sergeant, whom he married the next year. Their son Rémy was born two years later.

A recognized artist, Henri Duhem left his legal career in 1893 to devote himself to his art. He was friends with Auguste Rodin , Camille Pissarro and Henri Le Sidaner and, like Gustave Caillebotte , became a passionate collector of contemporary works of art.

With his wife he visited Italy , Holland , Belgium , England and North Africa . Henri Duhem spent every summer in his country house in Camiers . With the support of Camille Pissarro , he visited the United States in 1902 .

During the First World War , his son Rémy fell on June 20, 1915 in the Battle of Éparges. Duhem's wife Marie died three years. Henri Duhem, lonely, took over the administration of his hometown Douai in northern France. He dedicated a book to the memory of the deceased family members: La mort du foyer (“The death of the family home”, Éditions Figuière, 1922).

In 1932 he was raised to the rank of Commander of the Legion of Honor .

Henri Duhem finally left northern France in 1937 and moved to Juan-les-Pins on the Côte d'Azur in the villa "Mont Riant". He died on October 24, 1941 during the German occupation . He bequeathed his collection of paintings to his adopted daughter Nelly Sergeant-Duhem.
