Henri Epstein

Henri Epstein (* 1891 in Łódź , Russian Empire ; † 1944 probably in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Polish painter, poster painter and graphic artist of Jewish descent , active in France , member of the École de Paris .

Life

Epstein lost his father at the age of three and was raised by his mother. He began to learn drawing and painting at the Jakob Katzenbogen drawing school in Łódź. In 1910 he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , since 1912 he studied in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière .

During the First World War he volunteered for the Polish army.

After the war, he stayed among the Parisian avant-garde painters who met in the La Ruche rotunda on Montmartre . a. friends with Amedeo Modigliani , Chaim Soutine , Marc Chagall , Jules Pascin and Maurice Utrillo . From 1921 he took part in the Paris salons.

Henri Epstein painted still lifes, nudes, genre pictures and landscapes. He also dealt with book design and poster painting.

Before 1939 he bought a farm in Épernon . He lived there in hiding during the Second World War , but was arrested on February 23, 1944, imprisoned in the Drancy assembly camp and probably killed on March 7, 1944 after deportation to the Auschwitz concentration camp .
