Henri Marchand

Henri François Jean André Marchand (born August 28, 1898 in Mainvilliers , Eure-et-Loir , † May 22, 1959 in Paris ) was a French actor .

Life

Marchand was born in Mainvilliers in 1898 to Jean Henri Marchand, a railroad worker at Chartres station , and Marie Rose Françoise Hardy, a housewife. After attending the municipal school in his hometown, he switched to the cathedral school in Chartres, where he later worked as a telegraph operator for the French Post Office (PTT) and delivered telegrams. Fascinated by the theater, he knew entire dialogues from stage plays by heart and recited them in front of his colleagues. He eventually traveled to Paris to take acting classes and subsequently received an Acting Award.

Marchand had his first screen appearance in 1927 in the short film Mathusalem by Jean Painlevé . Four years later he got a leading role in René Clair's Long Live Freedom (1931) alongside Raymond Cordy . The satirical film was very successful at the time and was also nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Production Design . A great career then seemed to be in prospect for Marchand. But there were almost exclusively small supporting roles in more or less important French productions. In the 1940s he even took a film break of several years. It was not until 1950 that he was seen again in small roles on the canvas, as in Under the Sky of Paris (1951) by Julien Duvivier . In 1952 he worked again in Die Schönen der Nacht, directed by René Clair. In 1956 he was also used in the film The Adventures of Till Ulenspiegel , in which Gérard Philipe took on both the lead and the direction.

Marchand was married twice. His first marriage was in 1934, the second in May 1959, nine days before his death from a serious illness in Necker Hospital in Paris. He had lived in a marital relationship with Alphonsine Leclair for some time and wanted to clarify his family situation with a marriage. His grave is on the Cimetière Parisien de Pantin.
