Henri François Émile Termier (born December 13, 1897 in Lyon , † August 12, 1989 ) was a French paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Termier, who comes from a family of doctors and scientists, served as an artillery officer during World War I and received the Croix de guerre . He then studied in Grenoble , was an assistant at the University of Montpellier from 1923 to 1925 and then from 1925 in the geological survey of Morocco under Pierre Despujols, where he worked until 1940. He recorded a region of around 20,000 square kilometers in central Morocco and the Middle Atlas , which resulted in his 1936 dissertation and two geological maps on a scale of 1: 200,000. From 1940 to 1945 he was head of the geological service in Morocco. From 1945 he was professor at the University of Algiers and from 1955 at the Sorbonne , where he headed the Laboratory for General Geology.

Termier is best known for research into the geology and paleontology of Morocco, where his preferred area was the Tichka massif. In 1942 he found dinosaur fossils of Cetiosaurus mogrebiensis from the Bathonium in the Moroccan Atlas .

He was married from 1942 to the paleontologist Geneviève Termier (1917-2005, nee Delpey), with whom he had a son. Geneviève Termier did research for the CNRS and together they published numerous books.

The mineral henritermierite is named after him.

Termier was a gifted pianist.
