Live and act

Pitot started out working as a mathematician and astronomer . He dealt with currents in rivers and canals. On the basis of the erroneous assumption that the flow speed of a body of water would increase with depth, he devised a device that could display this speed. This simple device is still known today as a pitot tube .

He became known at the time through the design of the Aqueduc de Saint-Clément near Montpellier and the widening of the Pont du Gard near Nîmes . Pitot was admitted to the French Académie des Sciences in 1718 .

In geometry, Pitot's theorem is named after him.
