Henrich Grote

Henrich Grote (born November 9, 1920 in Lingen (Ems) ; † October 25, 1995 in Hamburg ) was a German naval officer , most recently a flotilla admiral of the German Navy .

Navy and post-war period

Henrich Grote joined the Navy on October 1, 1938 and was promoted to lieutenant on April 1, 1941 after completing his training as an officer candidate . Initially, Grote served in the 2nd minesweeping flotilla and was deployed in the Atlantic area from the North Cape to the Bay of Biscay . On April 1, 1943 he was promoted to first lieutenant at sea .

He later reported on the submarine weapon and was trained there. Shortly before the end of the Second World War , in March 1945, he became the commander of the submarine U 3516 . He had the boat sunk off Travemünde himself on May 2, 1945 , without being able to undertake a patrol with him beforehand.

After a short captivity , Grote studied natural sciences and became a teacher in Schleswig-Holstein .

Service in the German Navy

In 1956 Grote joined the newly established German Navy and initially served in the field of command of the destroyers . From July 1961 to September 1962 he was first officer of destroyer 6 as corvette captain and from October 1963 to March 1964 as frigate captain, commander of destroyer 1 . From April 1968 to March 1969 he led the 3rd destroyer squadron as sea captain , which consisted of four class 119 destroyers ( Fletcher class ). In April 1969 he took over the newly established 1st destroyer squadron and put the new class 103 destroyers ( Charles F. Adams class ) into service.

In the meantime, Grote took part in a course at the Naval War College of the United States Navy in Newport (Rhode Island) . He was also head of the operations department in the NATO Naval Forces Command Baltic Sea Access .

From October 1972 to December 1973, Grote was a Flotilla Admiral in command of the Baltic Sea Division and then, until his retirement on March 31, 1981, he was in command of the Bundeswehr logistics school in Hamburg.
