The Henry Antes House is a historic building near Pottstown in Montgomery County , Pennsylvania . It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1992 and is now a museum.

architecture

Henry Antes House was built in 1736 by the Freinsheim settler Johann Heinrich Antes . The economical window arrangement and the pitched roof are reminiscent of the medieval architecture of the home of the builder. Quarry stone and sandstone were used as building materials for the two-and-a-half-story building . The associated property had a size of 80  hectares and has hardly been developed economically due to its isolated location. The floor plan with three rooms per floor corresponded to the then common architecture in Central Europe. Antes was the most recognized master builder among the German-speaking colonists at that time. The massive door frame of the southwest entrance area is made of black walnut and the windows have a simply suspended, sliding window frame . The house is one of the best preserved examples of German settler architecture typical of the mid-Atlantic states prior to 1760.

history

Antes had emigrated to the Thirteen Colonies in 1720 and became a leader of the Moravian Brethren . Henry Antes House served as a Brothers' Union school in North America from 1745 and is recognized as one of the first in the Thirteen Colonies to offer non-denominational classes and allow African American students to attend.

The Henry Antes House has been on the National Register of Historic Places since May 12, 1975 . On April 27, 1992, it was granted National Historic Landmark status.
