Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk KG , GCVO , VD , PC (born December 27, 1847 in London , † February 11, 1917 in Arundel ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Life

Henry Fitzalan-Howard was born on December 27, 1847 as the eldest son of Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk (1815-1860), and his wife Augusta Lyons (1821-1886) in London. He held the courtesy title of Earl of Arundel until his father's death .

Henry Fitzalan-Howard was a Roman Catholic , like the entire family of the Earls of Arundel . After the Catholic emancipation in the United Kingdom in 1829 , the consolidation and social integration of British Catholicism was one of its primary political concerns. He gave considerable sums for the construction of new Catholic churches, especially for the later cathedrals of Southwark , Arundel , Sheffield and Norwich , in London also for the Oratorian Church and the Newman memorial . However, numerous social and charitable projects he founded or supported also had a lasting effect.

From 1898 he published the hymn book Arundel Hymns together with Charles Tindal Gatty , to which Pope Leo XIII. contributed a personal preface.

He died on February 11, 1917 in Arundel, the ancestral home of his family. He was married twice, his son Bernard from his second marriage to Gwendolyn Constable-Maxwell, 12th Baroness Herries of Terregles (1877-1945), followed him as Duke of Norfolk .

Political career

Fitzalan-Howard turned to politics soon after he came of age. Not only did this follow from his inherited dignity of Earl Marshal of England, but it was also in keeping with his own intentions. He became Lord Lieutenant of Sussex and was mayor of Sheffield , Westminster and his home parish of Arundel. In the Conservative Government of the British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury , he was Postmaster General from 1895 to 1900. He also became a member of the Privy Council . For his services, he was accepted as a knight in the Order of the Garter in 1886 .
