Henry Jaglom

Henry Jaglom (born January 26, 1938 in London ) is an English film director and screenwriter . and actors . He is considered one of the most prominent independent filmmakers in Hollywood .

Life

The son of a Russian Jew who fled to England as a result of the October Revolution came to New York City with his parents in 1942 . There he completed an acting training in The Actors Studio of Lee Strasberg and performed in smaller theaters and cabarets. In the late 1960s he moved to Hollywood and came into contact with the film industry. After a few minor roles, working on the editing of Easy Rider in 1971 helped him get started as a filmmaker. His first feature film A Magician by My Side with Tuesday Weld , Orson Welles and Jack Nicholson earned him a friendship with Welles as well as an enthusiastic review by Anaïs Nin , but commercially he was like many of his early films: they were clear in Europe more successful than in the USA.

Nevertheless, Jaglom's personal fortune enabled independence from the major Hollywood studios and the laws of the American film market. So he was able to always create his films in his own, unmistakable style. Mostly they play in his personal environment, family and friends appear, be it his respective partners or his brother Michael Emil, who is himself an actor. The cinematic thematization of Jaglom's private life is taken to extremes in the 1985 feature film Forever and Eternal , which focuses on the divorce from his first wife, Patrice Townsend.

Jaglom's films are very dialog-heavy and focus on the actors. Often they speak directly into a video camera directed by Jaglom. This makes the scenes look like improvised. However, Jaglom defends himself against this label and emphasizes that his films are definitely based on an extensive script. The difference to other directors is that he only sees his script as a starting point for the film and encourages his actors to go beyond that and get themselves involved in the scenes. His style is often compared to Woody Allen and earned him the nickname "Woody Allen of the West Coast ", but Jaglom differentiates that Allen mostly makes fun of his characters, while Jaglom himself only shows his characters as authentically as possible in front of the audience.

In his last films, Jaglom withdrew more from his films as an actor. In Eating , Babyfever and Going Shopping , in his so-called Women's Trilogy, he made women the sole focus of the films. Venice, Venice and Festival in Cannes are homages to the European film festivals in Venice and Cannes . Hollywood Dreams is about the film dreams of a young actress.

Jaglom says of himself that he is the happiest person in Hollywood because he has managed to make 15 films in this city that came only from himself, frame by frame, without a studio ever telling him about his films.
