Henry Lambertz

Henry Joseph Napoléon Lambertz (born January 22, 1834 in Aachen , † March 22, 1898 in Burtscheid ) was a German baker and confectioner and namesake of the Henry Lambertz Printenfabrik in Aachen .

biography

The son of the confectioner Johann Werner Lambertz (1802–1866) from Erkelenz and Adelheid Geulen (1803–1876), daughter of the tondeur de drap ( cloth cutter ) Johann Heinrich Geulen and Magdalena Königs, trained as a baker in the family business Confectioner. In 1831 the father had moved to Aachen and initially settled in the city center on Büchel until 1855. In the next few years Johann Werner Lambertz refined his craft and settled on confectionery products. In 1855 he moved his business to Ursulinerstraße 8, where he ran his master business until his death in 1866.

Henry Lambertz himself had expanded his knowledge of confectionery and chocolate production in the Kingdom of Belgium before 1860 , where he also worked on April 10, 1860 in Huy Pauline Macorps, daughter of Bourrelier Michel Joseph Marie Macorps (1778 - October 28, 1858) and the Marie Joseph Demasy (1788 - June 1, 1834) had married. In the same month Lambertz returned to Aachen and took over the so-called Haus zur Sonne at market number 7 - in earlier times the Haus zum grün Schilde , which previously housed the pastry and confectionery of the retired Franz Fromm. Lambertz now produced all kinds of confectionery here, as well as pralines , dragees , jellies, desserts and canned fruits, as well as syrups , liqueurs and punch essences. His further development of the Aachener Printen in particular became the company's figurehead. This former bread from the Dinant area in Belgium, known as “Couques de Dinant”, was originally distributed by migrant workers, especially the copper bats here . Since the continental blockade , farin sugar and sugar beet syrup had been added to this bread instead of cane sugar , which was no longer available on the market , which led to a correspondingly darker, coarser, tougher and difficult to shape dough. This dough had the advantage of being able to be shaped and manufactured in the factory without any problems. This made this Printen type much more suitable for shipping and thus for opening up new Printen markets. After the list of ingredients had already been changed around 1820 by adding cinnamon , anise , cloves , cardamom , coriander , allspice , but also orange peel and ginger , which led to the development of the herb print, Henry Lambertz started his business in 1860 Manufacture of liquid chocolate and now created the chocolate print.

In the meantime, two brothers of Henry Lambertz also settled in Aachen as bakers and confectioners, Johann Jakob at Wilhelmstrasse 66 and Johann Matthias at Hochstrasse 28 , the latter later running his business as a delicatessen, fish, wine and liquor store . In addition, the family had their parents' bakery and confectionery shop in Ursulinerstrasse until 1876, which was continued by his wife Adelheid after the death of Johann Werner Lambertz.

From 1872 at the latest, Henry Lambertz was awarded the title of purveyor to the court of three noble houses, after he had regularly supplied the Belgian, Dutch and Prussian royal houses with his products. The house's sun emblem has now also been adopted as the company logo. Lambertz expanded its range to include English biscuits , domestic and foreign liqueurs and medicinal tokens . In 1874 he modernized his business with a steam engine and in 1876 opened a branch at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz 10.

Henry Lambertz, who was seriously ill in the 1870s, decided to sell his business and the Haus zur Sonne to the former brewer and relatives from a branch of the Christian Geller family and his wife Josephine nee. Ross, because his only child, daughter Marie (born January 10, 1861), was still too young to take over the company. The sale was decided on September 5, 1878 and notarized on September 16, 1878. One year after Henry Lambertz's death, Geller arranged for the name Henry Lambertz to be registered as a word mark at the German Patent and Trademark Office on July 8, 1899 and registered as a protected word mark in the register of the German Patent and Trademark Office on October 4, 1899 under confectionery and baked goods of all kinds and also the name court supplier could be adopted. In addition to the headquarters on the market with the rear entrance in Augustinergasse, where the factory was also located, the overall operation now also included the branch on Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and another one on Dahmengraben 16.

In addition to his professional commitments, Henry Lambertz also volunteered and suggested, among other things, supported by donation funds, the new building of the Heart of Jesus Church in Aachen .

Henry Lambertz died on March 22, 1898 at the age of 64 and was buried in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .

There are two portraits of the couple Henry and Pauline Lambertz that were made by the Aachen painter Heinrich Franz Carl Billotte and are currently in private hands.
