Henry Marshal

Henry Marshal († October 26, 1206 ) was an English prelate . From 1194 he was Bishop of Exeter .

origin

Henry Marshal came from the Anglo-Norman Marshal family . He was the son of Baron John Marshal and his second wife Sybil, sister of Patrick of Salisbury, 1st Earl of Salisbury . He was the youngest brother of William Marshal , who later became 1st Earl of Pembroke. There is little reliable information about his youth.

Spiritual career

Henry probably owed his elevation to Dean of York by King Richard I to his brother William. On the day of his exaltation, September 15, 1189, he was ordained a subdeacon and a deacon . In York he quickly got into an argument with Archbishop Geoffrey , who finally excommunicated him in early 1190 . Nevertheless, Marshal continued to exercise his office as dean and also served as a royal judge. The dispute with Archbishop Geoffrey had not yet been resolved when he was proposed by the king as the new bishop of the Diocese of Exeter in early 1194 . This happened again on the intercession of his brother William and of Archbishop Hubert Walter of Canterbury, who had been his predecessor as dean and had since become royal justiciar . The Diocese of Exeter had been vacant since June 1191 , and due to the Third Crusade and the subsequent imprisonment of the king, no new bishop had been elected. Before February 10, 1194, Marshal was elected by the Cathedral Chapter , and on March 30, 1194 he was ordained bishop by Archbishop Hubert Walter at Canterbury .

Bishop of Exeter

During the vacancy, goods of the diocese had been misappropriated by individual canons and given to other people. Marshal received from Pope Celestine III. the permission to reclaim these goods, unless the allocation was decided by the cathedral chapter. Otherwise he was generous to the canons, and he donated vestments and decorations for Exeter Cathedral . The construction of the cathedral was probably completed during his tenure, for the maintenance of which he imposed a fee on every household in Exeter . He settled a dispute between the archdeacon of Exeter and the cathedral chapter in favor of the cathedral chapter. He maintained good relations with Baron William Brewer , who founded Torre Abbey in his diocese in 1196 and Dunkeswell Abbey in 1201 . He himself had a church built in Horsley , Surrey , a property outside his diocese. In 1202 he vigorously took action against the sons of clergymen who, contrary to canon law, had filled their offices as successors to their fathers.

When Johann Ohneland became king in 1199 as the successor to his brother Richard, he asked Marshal 300 marks so that he could confirm his deeds, the chaplaincy of Bosham in Sussex and the tax exemption of his goods. Marshal then paid the king £ 100, the other £ 100 he owed it until his death. He was buried in Exeter Cathedral. After his death, the diocese remained vacant until 1214 due to the conflict between John Ohneland and the Pope over the election of a new Archbishop of Canterbury.
