Henry Mason Adams (born February 12, 1907 in Fall River , † July 5, 1992 in Santa Barbara ) was an American historian. He taught history at the University of Santa Barbara in California.

Life

After attending school in his hometown of River Falls, Adams began studying history at Williams College . In the fall of 1926, after attending the Summer School of the University of Wisconsin in 1929, he moved to Lehigh University in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania , where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1930.

In 1930 and 1931, Adams studied at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and at Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. This was followed by extensive trips through Europe. From 1932 he continued his studies in Washington.

He then enrolled at the Graduate School of the University of Southern California , which he left in 1934 with a master's degree. In 1935 he went through in-depth studies in history and Latin at the Pacific Military Academy . From 1935 to 1937 he was a graduate student and assistant in the Department of History at Stanford University. Here he received his PhD in 1937 .

Adams began his teaching career in the late 1930s, which was interrupted by his participation in World War II. From 1947 he taught as an assistant professor and later as a full professor at Santa Barbara College, University of Southern California. In 1974 he retired.

The focus of the teaching and research activities of Adams, who belonged to the revisionist wing of American historiography (so he turned against the position of German war guilt in the First World War), was on the study of European history. So he presented works on the Franco-German War of 1870/1871 and a biography of the German politician Franz von Papen . Politically, he was extremely conservative, for example he advocated a sharp course in the confrontation with the Soviet Union .
