Henry Pigot

Sir Henry Pigot GCMG ( 1750 - June 7, 1840 ) was a British general .

He was the eldest son of Admiral Hugh Pigot (1722–1792) from his first marriage to Elizabeth le Neve.

He joined the British Army in 1769 as the Cornet of the 1st Dragoons . In May 1783 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed Adjutant-General in Ireland . In June 1787 he became captain of a company in the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards . In December 1793 he became the aide-de-camp for King George III. and took part in the fighting of the First Coalition War in the Netherlands . In February 1795 he was promoted to major-general . In October 1798 he became Colonel in the 82nd Regiment of Foot . In September 1800 he captured Malta from the French and accepted the surrender of the French general Claude-Henri Belgrand de Vaubois . From February 1801 to July 1801 he served as civil commissioner of Malta . He was promoted to lieutenant general in May 1802 and general in January 1812. In December 1836 he became Colonel in the 38th Regiment of Foot . In May 1837 he was knighted as the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George .

He died unmarried and childless on June 7, 1840.
