from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Pole, 1st Baron Montagu (* around 1492 , † January 9, 1539 ) was an English nobleman and participant in the Exeter conspiracy .

family

He was the eldest son of Sir Richard Pole and Margaret Plantagenet , daughter of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence and Isabella Neville . His maternal grandfather, the Duke of Clarence , was the brother of King Edward IV and Richard III. His maternal grandmother was Isabella Neville, daughter of the most powerful man of his time, Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick . So he is a descendant of Edward III. and theoretically his descendants would have a claim to the throne.

Life

He was promoted to Knight Bachelor on September 25, 1513 in the Church of Tournay by King Henry VIII . On October 20, 1514, the king summoned him to Parliament through the Writ of Summons , giving him the hereditary title of Baron Montagu . In 1536 he was one of the noble intrigues against Queen Anne Boleyn , who fell out of favor and was subsequently executed.

Imprisonment and execution

On November 4, 1538 he was arrested with everyone else involved in the Exeter conspiracy , including his brother-in-law Edward Neville. The reason for this was that they were charged with treason against King Henry VIII. Thomas Cromwell wrote that this happened even though Henry Pole was related to the King and therefore enjoyed some protection. Those arrested were detained in the Tower of London . On December 2, 1538, Montagu was ostracized by parliament and lost all titles and lands. Edward Neville was executed on December 8th. A cousin of his, Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter , was fate a day later. He and all the other conspirators imprisoned were executed on January 9, 1539.

Ten days after Montagu's detention, his mother was also arrested. It was decided that she was not involved in the betrayal of her son, but she was executed on May 27, 1541 at the age of 67.

His only living son, Henry, was brought into the Tower at the same time as his father. It was expected that he would be executed like his grandmother, yet the king did not risk a deterioration in public opinion. Henry spent the rest of his life a prisoner in the Tower, still alive in September 1542, and eventually died there, likely of starvation.

Marriage and offspring

In May 1510 he married Jane Neville, daughter of George Nevill, 5th Baron Bergavenny and Joan Arundel. He had five children with her:

  • Catherine Pole (1511– September 23, 1576), ⚭ Francis Hastings, 2nd Earl of Huntingdon
