Herbern is a place in Ascheberg , Coesfeld district , North Rhine-Westphalia . Since the municipal reorganization in 1975, the formerly independent municipality has been part of Ascheberg. The population is around 5400.

history

The first documentary mention was made in 889 in a document from the Werden monastery . The place is located on the old trade route Münster - Dortmund - Cologne, today's federal highway 54 .

Around 1600 Herbern had more than 2000 inhabitants. The population suffered from the circumstances of the Thirty Years' War and a plague epidemic in 1635. Their number was almost decimated to 300.

David von Schlebrügge was mayor of Herbern until 1816. He was then appointed district administrator of the new Lüdinghausen district . In 1820 the population rose to around 2000 people.

On January 19, 1835, the last wolf in Westphalia - at that time - was killed by the innkeeper Josef Hennemann near the Lümke homestead in Herbern . The bellows of the wolf is in the Natural History Museum Munster issued.

At the time of the persecution of the Jews during the Nazi era, the Jewess Marga Spiegel and her daughter Karin were hidden by Heinrich Aschoff at Hof Aschoff in Herbern and thus saved from the threatened deportation to a forced camp. There they were able to live under a false name for two years and find safety until the end of the war. She wrote a book about these events, “Savior in the Night. By 1974 the population rose to around 4,700. On January 1, 1975, Herbern was incorporated into the community of Ascheberg.

  • Parish Church of St. Benedict : The three-aisled post-Gothic Catholic parish church of St. Benedict is located in Herbern, which was built in 1666 in place of the building that had been in existence since 1188. The tower, on the other hand, is still based on the original structure and was not completed until 1708. In the 19th century, St. Benedict was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style.
