Unter Bauern - Rescuers in the Night is a German - French film based on a true story by the director Ludi Boeken with Veronica Ferres and Armin Rohde in the leading roles. The film premiered in German cinemas on October 8, 2009. Ferres plays a Jewish woman who was persecuted by the National Socialists and eventually survived, the story of Marga Spiegel . The film drama is based on her memories, published in 1965 as the book Savior in the Night . It is also about the rescuers of Jews in an agricultural environment in Westphalia , the Münsterland .

Westphalia in 1943: The Jew Siegmund "Menne" Spiegel, formerly a horse dealer , does not want to lead his wife Marga and daughter Karin to their death and so he and his small family flee from the threatened deportation to the extermination camps in the east to their previous customers and war comrades from the First World War . He now asks her for help, and they don't hesitate for long: While the blonde Marga and her daughter are billeted as a “bombed Dortmund woman” on the farm of the Aschoff family - although Heinrich Aschoff has been a member of the NSDAP since 1930 - Menne is allowed to stay in the stables hide the peasants.
