Works

Herbert Berger wrote many one-act plays , characterized by black humor and grotesque storylines, which he called "bad pieces". The main theme of his dramas and radio plays is the sudden break-in of the irrational and gruesome into seemingly normal everyday life. Through the extreme situations in which they are placed, the protagonists of his dramas reveal their inhumane character, which was previously hidden behind a respectable mask. As a result, his works are reminiscent of the dramas by Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt . He also published short stories and a novel in the 1990s. The prose works also consistently continue the theme of his plays. His works have been translated into Russian, Polish and Czech.
