Herbert Bessel (* 1921 in Hamburg ; † March 25, 2013 in Rasch (Altdorf near Nuremberg) ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Career

Herbert Bessel was drafted into military service after graduating from high school in 1941. After the end of the war, he began studying draftsman and painter at the State Art School in Hamburg-Lerchenfeld in 1946 , where he took drawing courses with Willem Grimm . As a studio student, he received further suggestions from Erich Wessel . From 1947 to 1954 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg , including in the master class for wall painting and figurative composition with Otto Michael Schmitt . In the 1950s he made a name for himself with the design of church furnishings and art in architecture . Since 1964 Herbert Bessel lived and worked in his studio house in Rasch (Altdorf near Nuremberg) . On March 25, 2013, Bessel died at the age of 91.

In addition to painting, Bessel first developed the techniques of mosaic and terracotta relief. While the early works were mostly still conceptualized figuratively, from 1962 onwards abstraction came to the fore with increasing experience. He achieved a mastery in the design of colored glass windows that made him a sought-after commissioned artist in this subject. Around 40 different monumental glass works can be found in southern Germany. Bessel designed cabinet panels for private spaces - autonomous glass pictures that can be hung in front of a window. He designed a total of eight tapestries for the Nuremberg tapestry manufactory . Since 1972 Herbert Bessel had created an extensive graphic oeuvre. The museums of the city of Nuremberg and the Art Museum Bayreuth keep larger bundles of prints . An exhibition in the historic town hall of Altdorf , which the city organized in 2011 in honor of the artist's 90th birthday, was dedicated to Herbert Bessel's late pictorial work.
