The list of museums in Nuremberg gives an overview of the museum landscape in Nuremberg .

introduction

Nuremberg is one of the most important museum locations in the German-speaking area and has the most museums per inhabitant of the German cities of millions and half a million . In addition to the museums of the city of Nuremberg, there are a few other large museums run by the state or private institutions, but also smaller museums that deal primarily with Nuremberg customs and history, or other specific subject areas.

Nuremberg city museums

Museums of the City of Nuremberg has been an association of all Nuremberg museums operated under city direction since 1994. They see themselves as a decentralized municipal city museum. The Albrecht Dürer House , which was opened as an artist's museum in 1828, is one of the museums, collections and sights . With the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds , the Memorium Nuremberg Trials and the Nuremberg Toy Museum, there are other internationally renowned museums in the network. The Fembohaus City Museum as well as the Industrial Culture Museum and the other facilities are well received in the region. In 2019 the museum association counted around 800,000 visitors.

Furthermore, a so-called House of Games is planned in the Pellerhaus , which will be carried out together with partners and will represent a place of learning and a link between digital and analogue games. Today the building is already home to the German Games Archive and the Ali Baba Games Club .

Subject- specific museums such as the Arbor Museum or the Feldbahn Museum 500 are also part of the city's cultural landscape.

The opening of a branch of the Deutsches Museum with 2900 square meters of exhibition space and the content focus on future technologies and innovations with the core topics of energy , mobility , robotics , information technology and medicine has also been announced for 2020 . The Bavarian Bible Center is planning to open a Bible Museum in the Lorenz vicarage (currently under construction) in autumn 2020 .

Former museums

Exhibition building of the Bavarian Industrial Museum in front of the new building
The former Bavarian Trade Museum around 1900, today the seat of the Nuremberg Education Center

Over time, several, mostly smaller, museums had to close. This list is limited to museums whose work is documented on websites or in literature.

  • The first Norishalle was opened in 1882 as an art gallery for the Bavarian State Commercial Industry and an art exhibition in the old city park. After the demolition, a new building was built at the current location (Gewerbemuseumsplatz). This new hall housed the Bavarian Trade Museum until 1897 and the Nuremberg Railway Museum from 1899 to 1927 . Subsequently, the Norishalle, whose name only caught on in the 1920s, was converted into an art gallery for exhibitions of contemporary art. After the Norishalle was completely destroyed in the Second World War, a modern exposed concrete building was built on the same site from 1965 to 1969, in which changing exhibitions took place (including the Triennial of Drawings from 1979 to 1988 or museum sketches from 1889 to 1993). After renovating the house from 1997 to 2000, the Nuremberg Natural History Society and the Nuremberg City Archives moved into the building.
  • In the Erlenstegen district from 1907 to 1938, the previous facility of today's German Rifle Museum ( location ) was housed in the so-called shooting house. The museum was financially supported by the privileged Hauptschützen-Gesellschaft Nürnberg and the city and had a collection of rarities and trophies that were presented to the public by donation or loan. In the spring of 1938 it was looted by the Gestapo and the remains of the inventory were taken to the Germanic National Museum to be secured . There some of them fell victim to the air raids of January 2, 1945 during the Second World War . The remaining objects are still stored there.
  • On February 20, 1930, the Museum for Social Hygiene ( location ) was opened under the sponsorship of the Health Department. In addition to special exhibitions, there were many pictures and models in the permanent exhibition on the subject of “Urban Hygiene”, as well as mainly teaching specimens in the “Man” section. The National Socialists used the special exhibitions, such as “Inheritance - Race - People” (1936) for propaganda purposes. After 1945 efforts were made to reopen the house, but this failed due to the lack of suitable premises.
