Herbert Birchenough (born September 21, 1874 in Haslington , † February 28, 1942 in Newcastle-under-Lyme ) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Birchenough played for several small clubs in Cheshire and Staffordshire Counties , before joining the professional club Burslem Port Vale in the Midland Football League in October 1897 . He quickly established himself as a goalkeeper and won the Staffordshire Senior Cup with Port Vale in 1898 , and the club was accepted into the Football League Second Division for the 1898/99 season . There he was an important part of the defensive, which, with only 34 goals conceded, allowed very few in the league. On November 11, 1899 he was next to John Fitchett (Bolton) the only player from the Second Division who played for a selection of the Football League in a 3-1 win over the Irish League . The financially tight club was then no longer able to keep Birchenough and in January 1900 gave a transfer for £ 250 to first division firm Glossop .

Although his commitment helped to stabilize the defense, Glossop was at the end of the season with only four victories this season beaten on the bottom of the table and had to relegate to the Second Division. Birchenough played all 34 league games for Glossop in the second division season 1900/01, remained 12 times without conceding and conceded a total of only 33 goals, the club missed the return to 5th place but clearly. After another midfield placement with Glossop, he moved to league rivals Manchester United in October 1902 . There he quickly prevailed against Jimmy Whitehouse and James Saunders and completed 25 league games as well as five appearances in the FA Cup in the further course of the season . At the end of the season he left Manchester for Crewe Alexandra with play in the Birmingham & District League .
