Herbert Brödl (born May 23, 1949 in St. Pölten ; † December 16, 2015 in Enzenkirchen ) was an Austrian film director , author and producer .

biography

Herbert Brödl attended the Max Reinhardt Seminar from 1968 to 1969 and studied philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1969 to 1973 . In 1971 and 1972 he made his first films for ORF . In 1974 he moved to Hamburg and wrote scripts that were filmed by Peter Lilienthal , Rainer Boldt and Volker Vogeler . From 1976 he made films as a writer and director in Peru, Italy, South Africa, Vanuatu, Benin, Zimbabwe, São Tomé e Príncipe and again and again in Brazil, where eight of his films were made.

His filmmaking crosses the boundaries between genres, documentary and fictional staged with amateurs and actors, between found and invented, fact and fantasy.

In 1982 he founded the film production company Baumhaus Film Brödl in Hamburg, with which he made his films until 2002. From 1993 to 2007 he worked on an equator cycle that unites six films whose locations and stories are located in equatorial regions.

ARD , ZDF , ORF, 3sat and arte have aired his films since 1972, up to 5.5 million viewers and had in cinemas have been shown and at international festivals.
