Herbert Hinnendahl (born January 2, 1914 in Schildesche , today a district of Bielefeld ; † November 1, 1993 in Bielefeld) was Lord Mayor of Bielefeld for twelve years .

Life

Hinnendahl completed an apprenticeship at the AOK from 1928 to 1931 , after which he also passed two administrative examinations for social insurance. During the Second World War he was taken prisoner by the British , from which he returned to Bielefeld in 1945. In 1947, Hinnendahl, who had meanwhile joined the SPD , became a member of the city council. In 1961 he became mayor. In the local elections in 1961 there was a stalemate between the SPD and CDU / FDP , so that neither of the two camps was able to push through its candidate for the office of mayor. It was agreed that Hinnendahl would succeed Rudolf Nierhoff in 1963 . This was done and Hinnendahl was Lord Mayor of Bielefeld until 1975.

During his tenure he influenced the establishment of Bielefeld University as well as the local reorganization . In connection with the opening and above all the naming of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld in 1968, Hinnendahl came into the focus of the national press. The exhibition hall was named after Richard Kaselowsky , which, due to the role of the industrialist, caused numerous protests among others in the Friends of the Reichsführer SS . The mayor reacted unhappily and, in Heino Siemens' opinion, also undemocratic, by making it impossible for protesters to participate in city council meetings by filling the visitor seats early on. With the cancellation of the then North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Heinz Kühn , the opening event was so burdened that Hinnendahl canceled it.

Hinnendahl's term of office ended on May 22, 1975 and Klaus Schwickert was his successor. Just eight days later he was made an honorary citizen of the city. Hinnendahl died in 1993. His grave is in the Sudbrack cemetery.
