This article describes the history of the city leaders of Bielefeld . At first the judge appointed by the sovereign was at the head of the old town of Bielefeld. But there is evidence of a council since 1243, which also formed the college of lay judges. The chairman was a specially appointed judge. A mayor is first mentioned in 1265. Later there was a seated and an "old council". A council with a mayor has been named in the Neustadt since 1317. The council had seven to nine members. After the two cities were merged in 1510, the administration was reorganized in 1520. Thereafter, the mayor was appointed and the council elected annually. From the 16th century, parts of the council were also lay judges. In 1719 the Prussian king ordered a reorganization of the magistrate's college. The magistrate then consisted of two mayors, a chamberlain, a secretary, four councilors and six chiefs. This administrative organization was only changed with the introduction of the revised town order in 1831. At the head of the city was the mayor, who later received the title of Lord Mayor .

new town hall

During the time of National Socialism , the mayor was appointed by the NSDAP . After World War II , the Military Government of the British Occupation Zone appointed a new Lord Mayor, and in 1946 it introduced the British-style municipal constitution. The council initially elected the mayor from among its members as chairman and representative of the city, who was active on a voluntary basis. In addition, from 1946 the council also elected a full-time senior city director as head of the city administration.

Since 1994 there has only been a full-time Lord Mayor . This is the highest representative of the city, chairman of the council and head of the city administration . He has been elected directly by eligible voters since 1999.
