Herbert Knauer (born September 12, 1931 in Berlin-Karlshorst ) is a German chemist, engineer and medium-sized entrepreneur .

Life

Herbert Knauer grew up with his brother Peter in a civil servant family. His father Otto Knauer was a district judge , his mother Lucie Knauer a housewife. After the age of 17 at the Kant Gymnasium stored in Berlin-Karlshorst High School studied Knauer first few semesters of business administration at the Technical University of Berlin , then moved to the Department of Chemistry and was the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin in 1958 at Gerhart Jander with a working on the topic: Ionic reactions in absolute diethyl ether as a solvent to the Dr.-Ing. PhD . Until 1963 he worked there as a scientific assistant in the inorganic-chemical internship.

In 1962 he married Roswitha Asprion from the Swabian town of Horb am Neckar. The couple has four children.

Entrepreneurial activity

In 1962 the Knauer couple founded the company Wissenschaftliche Gerätebau Dr. Ing.Herbert Knauer GmbH in Berlin-Schmargendorf . Initially, vapor pressure osmometers were manufactured for the fields of medicine and chemistry. The special feature of the devices produced was that temperature differences of 1/1000 degrees Celsius could be measured precisely. In 1974 production was finally expanded to include the development of system modules for HPLC, including the required separation columns . Production has now continued in the newly built production building in Berlin-Zehlendorf . The individual analytical modules such as pumps, detectors and column ovens met the high requirements of both research and routine analysis. As a result, the company prevailed against international competition and also opened up markets abroad.

Knauer's daughter Alexandra Knauer has been the sole owner of the company since 2000. She ran the company from 2007 to June 30, 2014 together with Alexander Bünz. After Alexander Bünz left the company, Alexandra Knauer is the sole managing director. In 2008 the company launched an HPLC line for ultrafast chromatography on the market. In 2009, an HPLC with high-pressure stable glass columns for biochromatography followed. In 2012 the company launched a preparative HPLC line in a compact design. In the same year, the company was recognized as the second most innovative German company in the size class 51 to 250 employees in the TOP 100 competition. In 2013 the Berlin-Brandenburg Innovation Prize followed. The company employed well over 100 people in 2012 and exports to 60 countries with a turnover rate of around 70%.

Herbert Knauer is a member of the Society of German Chemists .
