Herbert Kolfhaus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbert Kolfhaus (born October 10, 1916 , † January 17, 1987 in Munich , buried in the Sollner Waldfriedhof in Munich near his last residence) was a German cartoonist.

Life

Herbert Kolfhaus attended the grammar school of the Hermann Lietz Schools in their boarding school at Schloss Bieberstein in Hesse . After graduating from high school, Kolfhaus became a reporter during the war years of the Second World War and felt called to become a freelance caricaturist after the war.

His precisely pointed work quickly made him known and experienced growing appreciation. This is why his signature “HeKo” soon achieved the status of a recognized trademark in the industry. Even if one tried again and again to put a modern, strongly conservative stamp on Kolfhaus, he always remained true to his liberal convictions, which, however, could not hide the fact that conservative moments nevertheless emerged.

His works, sketches and caricatures were published not only by Münchner Merkur , Bayernkurier and other Bavarian magazines, but also by newspapers and magazines (including Rheinischer Merkur , Deutsche Zeitung , Christ und Welt etc.) far beyond Bavaria . Around 3,000 caricatures were completed between 1950 and 1960, and Herbert Kolfhaus sketched many times more at the time. The work of earlier years in particular was a new challenge every day, because he not only examined domestic political developments, but also addressed the global foreign policy scenario. Anyone who saw him at work remembers the shortwave radio with which Kolfhaus obtained the news for the caricature for the next newspaper edition in the 50s and 60s in the absence of global information networks.

Many journalists close to or politically familiar urged him to write and compose caricature books. But with the exception of a few small books he did not give in to such a request decisively. But Kolfhaus has enriched many a book edition by other authors with illustrations and caricatures.

Some of the countless caricatures by Herbert Kolfhaus can also be found in the knowledge database CVCE, which is maintained by the Center Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l'Europe in Sassenheim , Luxembourg . Herbert Kolfhaus's work was also honored in 1993 with an exhibition in Munich under the theme “The European Community in Herbert Kolfhaus's Caricatures”.

In view of his life's work, Herbert Kolfhaus is one of the great German caricaturists and - since he is at home in Bavaria - should be placed in a row with Horst Haitzinger , Dieter Hanitzsch , Ernst Hürlimann and Ernst Maria Lang , if you consider each of them for his time.

family

Herbert Kolfhaus's life's work lasted in all creative power and at the side of his wife Gertrud Kolfhaus until his peaceful death in 1987. The marriage had remained childless.

Creative inheritance

Herbert Kolfhaus's professional and creative legacy has been in the archive of the German political Hanns Seidel Foundation in Munich since 1990, in terms of its historical significance, and was processed there from 1996 and digitized from 1997. These are about 6 running meters of original drawings and sketches from the years 1950 to 1987 as well as books and newspaper clippings etc. (With regard to some image rights to caricatures by Herbert Kolfhaus, there is a list of various rights holders on the Internet.)
