Herbert Schäwel

Herbert Schäwel (born August 13, 1924 in Granskevitz / Rügen , † April 17, 2015 in Greifswald ) was a German Marxist historian and university professor.

Life

Schäwel attended elementary school and was accepted into new teacher training in the Soviet occupation zone in 1947 after the Second World War . As a new teacher, he joined the SED in 1949 . He passed the 1st and 2nd teacher exams in 1951 and 1952 and began a distance learning course in history for middle school teachers (1952-1954), which was followed by a study of history for the upper school (1955-1960) at the University of Education " Karl Liebknecht ” in Potsdam. As early as 1959, Schäwel began working as a research assistant at the Historical Institute of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , and received his doctorate in 1965. phil. and moved in 1970 to the Division of Marxism-Leninism , where he from 1972 to 1977 as a university lecturer in the history of the German labor movement was active and in 1976 his dissertation B presented. From 1977 to 1985 he held the full professorship for the history of the German labor movement in the Marxism-Leninism section at the University of Greifswald until his early retirement.
