Herbert Schauer is known together with Otto Bonhoff as the author of television films that deal with manifestations of international fascism and deal with numerous factual material: "Shadows over Notre-Dame" (1966, with Angelica Domröse ) has the activities of the Cagoulards , the members of the French fascist secret society before the Second World War , on the historical background. Extensive historical research is also the basis for the adventure novel by both authors about the legendary farmer general Georg Kresse, "Avengers, Rescuers and Rapiers" (1982, with Walter Plathe ). “Across all of Spain cloudless sky” (1971) describes in an exciting story the prehistory of the war in Spain in 1936/38, the intrigues of the German fascist secret service and the English Secret Service, the interweaving of corporate interests and the military test action of the German General Staff, and at the same time the complicated ideology Change of a German intellectual.

The television series “ The invisible visor ” (1973, with Armin Mueller-Stahl ) tells the story of a foreign scout of the MfS who uncovered the escape routes and the involvement of former high-ranking National Socialists in West German society. The film series about the protagonist Werner Bredebusch alias "Oberleutnant Detjen", also known as the "East German James Bond ", advanced to become a street sweeper in the GDR.

Schauer and Bonhoff's design method is characterized by the meticulousness of the historian and the detective flair of the documentalist, the preparation of facts and events, as well as the uncovering of little-known background information; in doing so, they orientate themselves “more on action pictures than on the events themselves” ( HJ Geerdts ) and the psychological profiling of the characters. Most of the works were also published as books in the GDR and abroad.
