Herbert Spiegelberg
Herbert Spiegelberg (born May 18, 1904 in Strasbourg , German Empire ; died September 6, 1990 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American philosopher and historian of philosophy of German origin. He is considered a representative of phenomenology .
Life
Herbert Spiegelberg was born in Strasbourg in 1904 as the son of the German Egyptologist Wilhelm Spiegelberg . He studied in Munich, Heidelberg and Freiburg, among others with Alexander Pfänder and Edmund Husserl . In 1928 he was with a thesis on the law and the moral law in pledges doctorate . Due to his Jewish origins, he was unable to complete his planned habilitation after the Nazis came to power . He first emigrated to Switzerland, and finally to the USA in 1938. There he taught at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and at Lawrence University in Appleton , Wisconsin . From 1963 until his retirement in 1971 he was a professor at Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri . Spiegelberg was best known for his historical overview of the phenomenological movement published in 1960.
