from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbert Stahl (born June 4, 1908 in Luckenwalde , † November 14, 1984 in Hamburg ) was a Baptist clergyman and theologian . From 1948 to 1973 he was a lecturer in church history at the theological seminar of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Hamburg-Horn .

Life

After his matriculation examination , Herbert Stahl enrolled at the Berlin University in 1929 and, from 1934, at the Francke Foundations in Halle . He studied Protestant theology and philosophy . In 1937 he obtained his theological license through research in which he examined the influence of Luther and Molinos on the theology of August Hermann Francke . It appeared in print in 1939. In 1955 the title Lic. Theol. in Dr. theol converted.

From 1937 to 1938 Herbert Stahl completed a candidate year at the Theological Seminary of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Hamburg-Horn and was then appointed pastor of the Hamburg Baptist Congregation Böhmkenstrasse . This congregation was constituted in 1834 under the presidency of Barnas Sears and is considered the oldest Baptist congregation in Germany. In 1943 the Baptist chapel was completely destroyed by a bomb attack. Due to Stahl's good ecumenical contacts, the congregation found a temporary home for their Sunday services in the St. Johannis Church in Hamburg-Harvestehude . Obedient to the need, Herbert Stahl moved the weekly events to the houses of the community members. This is how many house groups came into being. The Sunday School work took place in the homes of scattered throughout the metropolitan area parishioners.

In 1948 Herbert Stahl was appointed lecturer in historical theology from the seminar department of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Germany . He remained in this position until he retired in 1973. Günter Balders was his successor .

Herbert Stahl was married and after his retirement lived partly in the Allgäu and partly in Switzerland .
